Is Mexico safe for travelers, some things to be aware of.
Guests to South Padre Island have long enjoyed day trips across the border for shopping or dining. The two nation destination has been a great draw for our area. However, as of late things have been changing in Mexico. The US has occasionally issued travel warnings for various Mexican areas. Our closest city, Matamoros has not been one of them. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t new concerns for guests going in to Mexico. Here are some things you should be aware of. 1. You now must have a passport to travel in and out of Mexico. Border security is taken very seriously and if you choose to drive, your vehicle may be inspected. 2. Warring Drug Cartels have been known to have armed conflicts with the Mexico military, police or each others on the streets of Mexico. These conflicts do not stop for an innocent bystander. 3. Kidnappings have been reported. Criminals will hold American citizens for ransom or hold them long enough to empty your bank account via your cash card. The best advice is to enjoy all the wonderful activities and shopping on the US side of the border. But, those wishing to travel to Mexico should remember to keep their wits about them, always travel in a close group, stay visible in public areas, avoid any conflict and do not make a target of themselves. Leave your jewelry at home and consider walking rather than driving. Even then keep an eye on your self and each other.
