Visitors coming to South Padre Island often ask about transportation to the island and once they are on the island. There are actually lots of choices for vacationers. You may rent a car at the airport but, this is not the only option.
First there is an airport shuttle from the Valley International Airport in Harlingen. You can book your reservation online at www.SouthPadreShuttle.com or call 877-774-0050.
Once on South Padre there are plenty of ways to get around. Remember that the island is not vast. The town is 3.5 miles long and less than a half a mile wide. This makes the island a great walking destination. It is also a wonderful place for bikes, skateboards, rollerblades and more.
There are rental services offering fun scooters, dune buggies, bicycles, 2 and 4 person bicycles, electric cars and golf carts by the day or hour.
The island also offers the “The Wave” this FREE shuttle bus makes continuous loops on South Padre Island and another crosses the bridge to Port Isabel. This bright yellow bus stops at multiple wave stops all over the island. Just wait at one of them and enjoy a free ride to any other stop. It’s a great way to see the island and pick up a few tips from fellow passengers.
For further destinations on the island or evening outings there are plenty of taxi’s that service the South Padre Island area. Just call one for your pickup and they will be glad to meet you at your location.
South Padre Island is a friendly location for all kinds of alternative methods of travel. Be sure to get creative and enjoy your time on South Padre Island!
