Whether you’re in town for the weekend or are planning a more extended stay, there are a few “must-do” attractions that you’ll definitely want to experience. Here are a few things you just can’t miss on your next trip to South Padre Island!
Guided Nature Walks
SPI boasts some truly magnificent natural beauty, and one of the best ways to experience it is through a guided nature walk. Head over to the popular South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center to take a nature walk with a local nature expert!
All year long, the SPI Birding and Nature Center takes guests through some of the area’s most beautiful outdoor destinations. You’ll get to learn all about the plant and animal life that calls South Padre Island home, and your knowledgeable guide will answer any questions you might have along the way.
Tours are offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday. You can also take a tour at 1:30 or 3:15 on Mondays, 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, or 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
If you’re particularly interested in the area’s birds, book a guided birding tour. These tours are limited to just 10 participants per group, so you know you’ll get a personalized experience. You’ll be guided by a passionate naturalist who can point out all the most beautiful local species; you can even borrow some binoculars to get a closer look!
Birding tours usually last about two hours and are held multiple times throughout the week. You can easily register for your tour on the Birding and Nature Center’s website. Currently, birding tours are limited to guided ages 13 and over, so groups with smaller children will want to opt for the standard nature walk.
In addition to the guided nature walks and birding tours, the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center has much more to offer. Explore over 3,300 feet of boardwalk, watch the skies from five bird blinds throughout the Center, or get a 360-degree view from the five-story viewing tower. If you’re feeling brave, head over to the Alligator Sanctuary to watch these fascinating creatures in their natural habitats.
Farmers’ Market
When you’re in a new area, trying the local food is a great (and tasty!) way to feel like you’re really experiencing the place. Get to know the residents and explore a new side of SPI when you visit the Farmers’ Market!
Every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the South Padre Island Farmer’s Market brings together dozens of vendors and hundreds of customers to enjoy some of the best local products. You’ll find everything from fresh-baked bread and local produce to handmade soaps, arts and crafts, jams and jellies, and so much more.

The Farmers’ Market is held weekly at 8605 Padre Boulevard. This event is a relatively new addition to the SPI calendar, but it’s set to happen all year long, meaning you can participate even if you’re vacationing for the holidays!
Fireworks Capital of Texas
SPI is well known for its sandcastles, but you might not know that it is also considered the Fireworks Capital of Texas! Even if it’s not Independence Day or New Year’s Eve, you can enjoy some truly breathtaking fireworks displays right here on SPI.
Every Tuesday night throughout the summer, you can attend spectacular fireworks shows over the Bay. Talk about a view! You’ll get to witness a phenomenal show no matter where you view the fireworks from, but one of the most popular viewing spots is Louie’s Backyard. This display kicks off at 9:15 p.m.
But the fireworks in South Padre Island don’t stop there. At 9:15 p.m. every Thursday, Isla Grand Beach Resort’s Sandbar Courtyard is the place to be. They also offer a magnificent fireworks show that offers a spectacular view of the water as well.
Finally, Friday and Saturday nights are dominated by the fireworks shows behind Clayton’s Beach Bar & Grill. This show kicks off at 9 p.m. and will happen from Easter Weekend through the first weekend of October.
Of course, there are some special celebrations around the holidays. There’s usually a huge display for the 4th of July and Labor Day, so be sure to do your research if you plan to travel to SPI around these holidays.
