A trip to South Padre Island is about more than spending time on the beach. The island is also home to important wildlife conservation efforts, and Sea Turtle Inc. gives visitors an opportunity to learn about them firsthand.
Sea Turtle Inc. rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles, cares for turtles that cannot return to the wild, and works to protect nesting sea turtles. For guests staying in our South Padre Island rentals, a visit is an educational activity that can add something meaningful to a beach vacation.
Learn About Local Sea Turtles
Sea Turtle Inc. offers a closer look at the sea turtle species found in the Gulf of Mexico and the challenges they face. Visitors can explore the facility at their own pace and attend educational presentations offered throughout the day.
“Turtle Talks” cover the organization’s work and the sea turtles found in the area. You can also learn about conservation efforts during nesting season, when Sea Turtle Inc. helps protect Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nests on South Padre Island.
For families looking for educational things to do on South Padre Island, the experience combines wildlife, science, and conservation in a way that is easy for different ages to enjoy.
Meet Patients & Permanent Residents
One of the highlights of Sea Turtle Inc. is seeing the turtles currently receiving care. The organization rehabilitates approximately 40 to more than 100 sea turtles each year, with the goal of returning them to the wild.
Patients may be treated for injuries caused by fishing line and net entanglements, boat strikes, cold stunning, infections, predators, and other threats. Visitors may also meet permanent residents that cannot safely be released. These turtles serve as ambassadors that help educate the public about marine conservation.
Explore the Museum & Gift Shop
There is plenty to explore beyond the turtle habitats. Sea Turtle Inc. has an education museum where guests can continue learning about sea turtles, their habitats, and the conservation work taking place along the Texas coast. The museum, hospital, and gift shop are located inside climate-controlled areas.
Before leaving, stop by the gift shop for a souvenir. Purchases help support Sea Turtle Inc.’s mission, making it an easy way to contribute while picking up something that reminds you of your visit.
Support Rescue & Conservation
Visiting Sea Turtle Inc. directly supports an organization focused on rescue, rehabilitation, education, and conservation. Guests who want to contribute beyond admission can donate, volunteer, purchase needed supplies, or symbolically adopt a turtle.
Symbolic adoption options include resident turtles, current patients, nests, and hatchlings. Patient adoptions help fund needs such as veterinary exams, medical supplies, X-rays, food, and general care. Resident adoptions help with ongoing feeding and medical needs, while nest and hatchling adoptions support conservation work on South Padre Island.
